Ruby - July birthstone

July's birthstone is Ruby and it's rich color reminds us of love and passion. It has been said that the Ruby's red glow comes from an internal flame that cannot be extinguished, it's no wonder that making a gift of this stone is symbolic of everlasting love. I have a special spot in my own heart for ruby as it's my own birthstone :)

The word Ruby comes from the Latin "ruber," meaning red. It is a variety of the mineral Corundum which is the second hardest mineral after Diamond. It comes in a variety of colors, and is considered a Sapphire in any color except red.

In ancient times, they were thought to represent heat and power. It was said that if you threw one in a pot of water, the water would boil! This gem was also ground down to a powder and put on the tongue as a cure for indigestion.

I have not used any ruby beads so far in my jewelry creations, but one of my very talented colleagues and friends has..she sent me a picture to share...

You can find more of her beautiful work at Szarka's

If you have made something with rubies, please feel free to send to me while we are in the month of July and I will post it for you on my blog along with your link :) jonarablumaui @ hawaii.rr.com (remove spaces)

Interesting info about the ruby(which truly is beautiful, though for me personally, I find it a bit too pink). That necklace is gorgeous, but if it has the name Szarka linked to it, I think most of us have come to expect that... no surprise there! :-)

Nice piece, ruby is my birthstone as well. Unfortunately I'm not that fond of the colour red and always wished I was a blue stone. This does make me feel better about it though.

I'm a red head too Muddy..so I don't care to wear pink..I feel like it clashes. But in jewelry I would wear ruby. Esp something from Szarka :)

ChezChani...blue is cool and one I would probably like better too..good thing we don't only get to wear our b-stones lol!

Sarah..thanks for the links..they have some really awesome pictures of the ruby on that first one!

Szarka has amazing pieces.

What a good idea to highlight ruby this month. I think I will get something done and send it to you, lol!

Speaking about the color with ruby, I do have some lower grade ruby this is very chatoyant and more of a purplish color than red. Maybe an option for you gals that don't like to wear red or pink....Red hair is awesome so your limitations are worth it, in my humble opinion!
