Brightly Colored Hawaiian Flowers Inspire Maui Jewelery Designer

Pua Aloalo
Hibiscus brackenridgei

The hibiscus, all colors and varieties, was the official Territorial Flower, adopted in the early 1920s. At statehood in 1959, the first state legislature adopted many of Hawaii's symbols as part of the Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS, state laws). It wasn't until 1988, however, that the yellow hibiscus which is native to the islands was selected to represent Hawaii. For this reason, you will see many older photos and postcards with the red hibiscus, or any other color for that matter, as the state flower. These weren't incorrect at the time.

The above picture and information was taken from 50states.com

We have so many beautiful colors of Hibiscus in Hawaii..here are a couple of pictures I have taken myself while out on walks in my neighborhood.

I find the bright colors and rich variety of flowers here on Maui very inspiring to my jewelry creating. While I enjoy the subtlety and elegance of creating pearl jewelry..I also love to create funky bright colored jewelry.

Here are some stunning orange pieces that I posted on my blog a while back:

Mocha Sands Pearl and Silk Knotted Necklace

These are very nuetral but since they are pearls they pick up a lot of shimmer and different hues of brown. I think the color would look great on any skin tone.

They are available here at Jonara Blu Maui

Or if you are an Etsy shopper you can find them here in my Etsy shop.

I've been added to an Etsy Treasury!

I am so excited..I got a message yesterday from Unidlehands telling me she's chosen one of my jewelry items to add to a treasury..and she got her treasury added into the group of treasuries. I guess it can be difficult to get a spot as they only allow so many.

Her treasury theme is "Paisley, Pearls and Pretty Girls. I fit right into the pearl section. Here is the part of her treasury collection with my item in it. You can see it in full here. Mine is the purple coin pearl and chain necklace.

I would love to direct you to her own Etsy shop, however at the moment she is not making anything for her shop to sell. She does do a variety of crafts..jewelry..sewing handbags and her favorite folding palms. You can read about her on her bio that I linked above. Hopefully she will find her creative muse again and post some items up on Etsy :)

More race car baby shower pics

Here is a pic of Angel and myself before the party..

I tried to plan mostly race themed games..so we did a balloon pop relay race. Once I got volunteers for two teams of 8...I brought out a suprise..a box full of kiddy racing helmets I bought online and made them wear them. Everyone was cracking up..it was super funny. Heres a pic with my sister Kimberlee at the front of the left line and her husband is at the front of the right.

okay everyone..get ready to go!

and here is the dad of the baby shower Bryce

Another race game..a baby bottle drinking race! Total blackmail picture lol!

But thats okay..he got a cool gift for doing it...beach BBQ stuff :)

The little ones had fun too...

The sunset and view that evening were beautiful..it was hard to get a good pic through the cars and the powerlines..but this should give you an idea of what we were looking at :)

Race Car Baby Shower Success

The party turned out great..not as many showed up as we'd hoped... for a variety of reasons and bad timing...but the group that did show were great fun..everyone enjoyed the games and we laughed a lot! I think the parents were very pleased..esp the dad and the different guys that showed up. They thought it was pretty cool for a baby shower. After we were done with all the games they all kinda disappeared and were at the other end of the hall on the ground racing the little pull back racers I had put on the tables for decoration..it was hilarious!

Here are a few pics of the decorations ...I'll have more later..hopefully of some of the games in play. I have to get those from someone else since I was too busy to take pics at that time. They were funny and not your average baby shower games.

These cupcakes were supposed to be black..they look a little purple but it got the point across. The guys thought they were cool cuz they looked like grease lol!

For the favors I bought a tule that has bigger holes in it..so it was a bit 'manly-er' if there is such a thing as 'manly tule' lol! In it are hershey's kisses so that the silver color would show through along with these these super cool buttermints wrapped in checkerd wrappings ..some had race cars on them and some racing flags. I found them on Ebay And then a friend created the tags with the baby's info and the really cool car and race flags.

And we always make a kid table at our parties..this one was equiped with the mario cart game, car coloring pics, crayons and a little race track and cars.

100 feet of Race Car Road

Not much jewelry has been created this week...I've been working on the decorations for my friends baby shower. I usually make more of my own decorations..but this time there was just too many cool things available to buy to match the theme they wanted...'race cars' The dad is obsessed with cars..so they want to start their son out 'right' according to dads rule lol!

Here is what I have spent hours painting....these little roads that will go down the centers of the papered tables..I have 100 feet..I hope it's enough!

Everything was going smoothly..only now the most important part of the table decor..my little 3 1/2" pull back dragsters is not here yet and I'm freaking since the party is Saturday. Seems there is a misunderstand with the way Ebay makes their sellers choose what type of shipping they are going to use. One of the choices is Standard Flat Rate...which to me means..Flat Rate..which is always Priority..right? WRONG! While the post office did in fact say that Flat Rate is always priority..they told me there is no such thing as Standard Flat Rate ...and that the company should not use the terminology Flat Rate if it's not going out Priority mail. Well they did..and they sent it parcel post...or slow boat. It's gonna take 4 to 6 weeks to get here. I didn't realize there was a problem until late Thurs the 10th. I called early morning and told the company Noveltees the problem. The lady was nice but said it was Ebays fault as that was their only choice for that type of shipping..and then she suggested that I buy them again..have shipped priority...and refuse when the other package comes in. She promised it would get out that very day. The party is the 19th..that day was the 11th ...priority only takes 3 days. Should be fine. Wrong again! It's now the 17th and it did not come with the mail today.

So I'm trying not to get too upset over it. I've got a center piece for each table using an off road RC car tire and black read and white balloons with racing flags and little road signs..as well as some thankyou favors that a friend helped make to put on the tables. The little pull back dragsters would have just been the topping on the cake though.

Super Cool Beach Wedding Flip Flops!

I LOVE these from Stylish Beach Weddings! What a cute trail to leave in the sand!

Some Hawaii News...

Sadly we lost a couple of airlines here...Aloha and ATA. I'm not sure if ATA has other routes not going back and forth to Hawaii..but Aloha was one of our interisland airlines. Here is the latest on the airline situation from our Channel 2 News ..they say that there are more airlines expected to fall.

We watched on the news a report about the special job fair set up for all the empolyees who are suddenly having to look for jobs. Some of them have been employed by the airlines for 30+ years and don't even know how to begin to look for a job..let alone know how to fill out the electronic ways of doing it now. The article I just linked to brought out that a total of 190 private- and public-sector employers came forward during the week to provide potential jobs for displaced Aloha Airlines employees.

I feel so badly for everyone :(

Proud Momma

my son Cameron when he was about 8 with his cousin Kana

Today my son and I went to the Hui Malama Learning Center for his assessment test. It's the cutest little dark green plantation house up behind our hospital. I wanted to take a picture but our weather is crazy today...so much fog and vog ...the rain started coming down well before we reached our destination. On the way home it dumped and we started hearing thunder. I love thunder!

anyways..I've been homeschooling Cameron since kindergarden and he is now ready to study for his GED and get his 40 hours of adult school in so that he gets an actual diploma. Here in Hawaii if he puts in that 40 hours his GED test will provide him with a diploma rather then just the GED certificate.

We were pretty nervous..well probably just me lol! But he did so well! He was well advanced on his reading skills and just right on his math. I was a bit worried about the math since that has never been my forte. I got him the Saxon math books when he was in 6th grade and have used them ever since. I was told that with these he can teach himself. He's rarely needs my help and I can see how he is doing by the test booklet we bought that goes along with the book.

The teacher there said that it was a bummer he even has to put in the 40 hours because she knows he could pass easily..he doesnt' really need any more tutoring. But I am fine with it..I think it will be a good experience for him since he has been homeschooled his whole life.

I'm very proud of him..he's such a smart kid ;-)

Beach Wedding Ideas

I came across a blog post today by Nibs that had some amazing pictures taken from the current issue of British Wedding Magazine . The post focused on beach weddings...a favorite subject of mine. Here we have so many weddings of course with a tropical appeal, but I thought how cool it might be to rent a beach house on one of the islands and encorporate the feel from the photos in Nibs' post

Even if just for another nearby photography option. The ocean is always beautiful but to have a neat house right there to take some pictures with as well..esp like this one with the ocean in the background

These were very interesting pomanders they hung from a branch they found on the beach..I'm wondering if they could be done with tropical flowers as well..perhaps orchids.

Notice all the barefeet in the pictures here and on Nib's post. It's a must for a beach wedding in my oppinion ;-)

Meet Kobryn

As promised I have a couple of pics of the new little guy in my life. Our visit was really quick because he had just woken up from a four hour nap and was realy hungry. I had my son with me so the new momma needed some privacy to breast feed. He was quite grumpy as he'd just been circumsized before his nap. So I got to hold him for maybe a minute but then gave him back before he really started wailing..and then took a couple quick snap shots with my camera phone...

Tommorrow we head to the beach to spend some time with a long time friend visiting...we were close when we were teenagers and I've gotten to see her here on Maui a handful of times. Last time was 2005 when the group of us old gal pals got together. This time she has her family with her..I've never met her husband and step daughter so I'm excited to see them tomorrow.

Guess where I spent my day?

At the Maui Memorial Medical Center waiting for my new little nephew to be born :o)

This picture of our hospital was taken from Wailea Daily Photo If you're interested in seeing some realy nice pictures of Maui you should check out Kuanyin's blog. Most recently she takes you for a walk with her on the south Maui beach walk with pictures all along the way. And then in February she has a post with a beautiful picture of a Hawaiian girl that is done in Theme Graffiti or Street Art. She describes it as 'hauntingly beautiful' and I totally agree. This painting is evidentally in my own little town tucked behind a restaraunt. I've never seen it! Now I"m excited to find out from her where it is..I have to see it in person. I'll be bookmarking her site myself and checking it regularly since I don't get off my side of the volcano often enough. Seeing her pictures makes me remember how beautiful it is where I live and that I need to get out more and enjoy it.

Anyways..back to my day! I got the call at about 8 in the morning that Kobryn Kaikoa Comstock was most likely on his way. His momma labored at home till she could'nt bare it anymore..about 12:00 p.m. we all headed down to the hospital. Kobryn was here about a quarter to six. All 9 lbs 12 oz of him! He's a big boy and it was neat to see because my own son was 9 lbs 11.5 oz but he's 16 now so I forget what that looks like. Very big is what it looks like! lol! Big and healthy :) He was crying quite loud..so he's got some healthy lungs. And as momma, grandma and auntie talked to him he kept trying to open those eyes to see us..but they would go way up into his head..poor thing it was so funny.

I will go and visit tomorrow and hopefully have some pictures of the baby to share :)
