Some Garden and Craft Favorites

These are my favorite plants in my yard..they keep having babies too. I have no idea what they are called but the person I got them from called them "Ear Plants"...I"m sure that's not the real name. I don't know why I like them so much..I suppose its the pink color on the tops and the fact that they are just so different.

I know I enjoy succulents though because they are so interesting and many of them will grow from just a stolen leaf off of a momma plant.

This one is planted in a pot that I did the mosaics on. I used to go out to this old dump area that has all been over grown and cows now roam on it and find old pottery shards and glass. There were many other colors too but for some reason there is a heck of a lot of the blue and white china and cobalt glass there. I've recently made friends with Marjorie from Marjories Cracked Plate Jewelry and it just kills me that I threw out a whole box of saved pieces. She would have had a blast with them. I really never did all I wanted with them and I had so many favorite pieces. I used to think it was strange how I would get so attached to a broken piece of potter that I found..I had a little stash of favorites. But I bet Marjorie understands lol!

And then there is this little ground cover..I have no idea what it is either..but one day when my husband and I were out walking we saw some on the ground near the road..it wasstarting to crawl up the rock wall there too..so we plucked off about 3 little pieces and planted them. They took off immediately and now it's just growing and growing. It's gonna grow over this little bird house my husband and son built years ago.

Cute Little Cicada on my Hydrangeas

I believe this is a cicada..I searched google images and saw mostly some really ugly looking bugs...but did find a couple that looked like my little backyard visitor. He's so pretty with his green leaf body on my purple hydrangeas

I also stumbled across this website for Cicada recipies..it seems people eat them!!!! The really freaky looking ones!

I also found it quite funny that the first results in google for "leaf cicada" was a beaded bracelet Funny coincidence since I'm a jewelry maker lol!

That got me wondering what kind of cicada jewelry I could find out there so I took a look through Etsy and found these:

This beautiful set of butterfly and cicada brooches are from Tastes Like Vintage

If you REALLY like cicadas this one has a real one in a vial and is worn on a chain! You can find this one at Silentcheesecake Designs

This one too sports a real cicada as a pendant. Found at Honey Bee Handmade

What a trip! You learn something every day!

A cute little visitor in my backyard

This little zebra finch decided to visit us the other day. He just hung out for a couple of hours while my husband was weeding. We thought maybe he was a baby, or he was sick. But you could just get out of reach to him and then he would fly up quickly and land not too far away. Then he would find his way back.

I think he liked our little garden and the seed that were growing on the grass weeds..he was eating and eating away.

He also liked the shade cuz he hung our here for a while..can you see him? He's playing hide-in-go-seek ;)

He was such a pretty little bird..walking around like he owned the place. He totally didn't mind my photo taking. It was cool to get to see him close up. Zebra finches are not native to the Hawaiian islands, the story is that a pet shop brought some over and they escaped. If thats the case..they did really well here because they are thriving...we see them everywhere. But then who wouldn't want to live on Maui?
